Dr. David York

Music Director

Dr. David York began his career conducting Portland Gay Men’s Chorus in 1982 and since then he has conducted and composed music for, and even formed, many performing groups including the award-winning David York Ensemble, adult amateurs in various configurations (Aurora Women’s Chorus, satori men’s chorus, and Bells of the Cascades to name a few), children’s choirs from ages 5 to 18 (Portland Boychoir, Ovation Show Choir, The Olde Boys of Houston Boychoir), and numerous church choirs. Don’t be fooled by his decades of experience, David York brings a youthful zeal to his work with queer choruses.

Dr. York holds music degrees from Oklahoma City University (B.Mus. in voice performance and vocal music education), Portland State University (Masters in conducting and vocal pedagogy), and University of Oregon (PhD in composition and theory). His large-scale works include an opera entitled “Jonathan and David;” a ballet for strings, harp, and two male dancer“Apollo and Hyacinth;” a winter solstice show called “Return of the Light” that performed throughout December to capacity audiences in the Oregon Planetarium for over ten years, an oratorio honoring the earth “Mother of Us All;” and several commissioned works for men’s chorus including “Requiem” which gives homage to people who died of AIDS and “Millennium Mosaic”, an oratorio giving voice to queer youth. David moved from Oregon to Texas in 2019 and currently works as Director of Music at First Congregational Church.
