FAQs

I can’t read music. Can I still join?

No sweat! Though we’ve had some pros in our ranks, most of us are amateurs. You DO NOT have to be able to read music to perform, and perform well! All that is required is the desire (and of course, some ability) to sing. Our directors use a variety of creative methods to help our members learn the music and improve their vocal skills along the way. Remember, you have to start somewhere!

What happens after I join?

Once you do your audition, the director will assign you to a section. At your first rehearsal, you will receive an orientation where you will be provided a Member Handbook and introduced to your section leader and section coordinator — veteran members who assist our new members in becoming acclimated during their first season. You become a full member upon signing a Singing Member Agreement and payment of your member dues.

What is the time commitment?

PCH performs 4 concerts per season: fall, holiday, spring, and pride. Rehearsals for these concerts generally occur each Thursday evening from 7 — 10 p.m., with a break between the holiday and spring concerts and summer hiatus after the Pride concert.

Members are expected to perform in all concerts.

Additional weekend rehearsals may be required as a concert date nears. Beyond these minimum requirements, you may choose your own level of involvement. Please keep in mind, however, that we do perform most of our music from memory. As a community chorus, PCH offers an abundance of social enrichment, outreach and volunteer opportunities for its members throughout the year. So the question becomes, “how much time would you like to give?”

I’m not ready for the stage. What else can I do?

If you are not comfortable being on stage with PCH just yet, you may become a Non-Performing Member. These individuals help the organization in all manner of volunteer roles based upon skills and preference–including recruiting, choreography, clerical, marketing, fundraising, box office, and other areas. BCPA is a volunteer-driven organization, and can always use a helping hand! To volunteer, send an email to volunteer@pridechorus.org and ask about our current opportunities.

What is the financial commitment?

Basic membership dues are $200 for the full September through June season. Additional expenses may be incurred for attire, costumes, props, special rehearsals, and special events.

It is the policy of PCH that no member is denied participation based upon financial limitation, and we offer a scholarship program to assist with dues and other limited expenses. However, dues help defray our operating costs, and singers are expected to pay dues except in hardship situations.
